Speakers engage with an extended student audience at November User Group

Another fascinating set of speakers drew in the crowds at the latest Midlands LabVIEW User Group, which was held last month at Aston University. Students from the University attended as well as a group of our regular attendees, as Chris identifies 'it was great to enable the students to have the opportunity to engage with local employers as a different approach to supplement lectures but also for businesses to identify opportunities for future collaborations with the University".

The first presenter was Colin Freeman who is a Controls, Instrumentation and Electronics Engineer at Frazer-Nash Consultancy Ltd with extensive experience in aerospace control systems and the rail sector. His presentation focused on a recent project on which he collaborated with Bombardier, a global leader in the rail industry, to develop a state-of-the-art system integration test facility for Train Zero. Colin and his colleague Alex Jones, a regular at the MLUG meetings, provided an interesting insight in to technical aspects of the project which was great for the attendees to see NI Veristand in a practical setting.

James Powell was next up, he is a National Instruments LabVIEW Champion who started using the software when working at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. He is the author of a few LabVIEW packages on the LabVIEW Tools Network, notably “SQLite Library” and “Messenger Library”, the latter being the package he uses for the “actor model” style of programing. In addition he has a few other packages on the LAVA Code Repository, notably "JSON LabVIEW". James' presentation about leveraging SQLite in LabVIEW was well received by the audience, with some members commenting that they hadn't used this particular NI tool in their own work which meant it was interesting to hear about how it can be used.

We were very grateful to Aston University for providing us with the venue and refreshments and the ability to spread the LabVIEW word to their students.

The next User Group is to be held on Monday 13th February at the University of Birmingham, we are currently putting together the programme for the event and will release this as soon as it is confirmed.

Anyone who either uses LabVIEW within their current role or works with LabVIEW would be sure to find this event useful and informative, as well as being a good opportunity to network. Those interested in attending this free event should contact Jenny Bragg via email (mlug@argentaconsult.com) or call Argenta’s office on 0121 318 6363 to register and be sent details of the Coding Challenge.
