Argenta introduce inspiring speakers for the Midlands LabVIEW User Group

Our next free Midlands LabVIEW User group will be on Monday 20th July 2015 from 1pm at The University of Warwick. The group is going from strength to strength, with attendees finding them both a friendly forum and a great way to increase their knowledge and see different applications of this powerful software. Our guest speakers are Sophie Kinnear of Warwick University, on the topic of effective use of LabVIEW with scanning probe microscopes and Martin Griffiths from Metis Automation, leading a live code review session.

Sophie completed her Masters in Chemistry at The University of Warwick and stayed when the opportunity to study for a PhD in the Warwick Electrochemistry and Interfaces groups presented itself. Working under Professor Patrick Unwin, she has focused on two distinct areas of research: crystal dissolution and surface charge mapping. She’s talking about her work building bespoke scanning probe microscopes (SPM), controlled using an NI Field Programmable Gate Array card and LabVIEW software. This project involved developing a single SVN supported codebase which is capable of working with every instrument, despite their different hardware. This allows faster and more stable development and distribution of new techniques across all their microscopes.

Sophie commented “although the 2 topics in my PhD don't seem too closely related, both rely on the same instrumentation and LabVIEW code, and I became involved in writing much of this. LabVIEW quickly became the most enjoyable aspect of my work. The user group meetings are an excellent opportunity to meet professionals who use LabVIEW in industry and I’m looking forward to presenting my work to the group”. Sophie is largely self-taught and recently attended the November NI Days event where she successfully passed the Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer exam.

Our second guest speaker is Martin Griffiths of Metis Automation. Martin is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and one of only 40 Certified LabVIEW Architect here in the UK. He scored a perfect 100% taking his Architect exam. Martin is the senior software engineer for Metis Automation, where he has worked for the past four years and now heads up a professional and friendly team of software engineers. He’s leading a second live code review session following the great reviews we had for this at the last meeting.

Anyone who either uses LabVIEW within their current role or works with LabVIEW would be sure to find this event useful and informative, as well as being a good opportunity to network. Those interested in attending this free event should contact Jenny Bragg via email jenny.bragg@argentaconsult.com or phone us on 0121 318 6363.
