The success keeps coming for Midlands LabVIEW User Group

The fourth meeting of the Midlands LabVIEW User Group, affectionately nicknamed the MLUG, was held on 20th July at the University of Warwick. It welcomed a number of new members to the group as it continues to be promoted by both Argenta and existing members. The attendees particularly liked the ability to network with others in their field who they don’t usually come in to contact with. Additionally, the Live Code review session was well received, which has been included in the last two meetings due to its popularity.
The first session of the afternoon was delivered by Sophie Kinnear, a PhD student at the University of Warwick. She presented on a fascinating topic related to her work building bespoke scanning probe microscopes (SPM). These SPMs are controlled using a National Instruments (NI) Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) data acquisition card and LabVIEW software.
This project involved developing a single set of LabVIEW Virtual Instruments (VIs) that are capable of working with every instrument, despite their differences. This allows faster, more stable development and distribution of new techniques across all their microscopes.
A number of attendees acknowledged that whilst the field of research that Sophie focused on wasn’t directly linked to their everyday use of LabVIEW, it was interesting to hear about a different application of the software.
The second session was a Live Code Review by Martin Griffiths of Metis Automation. Once again this received very positive feedback from the attendees and is something that will continue to be integrated into the meetings.
The group are grateful to the University of Warwick for hosting the event in their Postgraduate centre.
The next event will be on Monday 12th October from 1pm at The Greswolde Arms Hotel, Knowle, nr Solihull, B93 0LL. Two fantastic speakers have been confirmed who will be covering interesting and innovative topic areas, visit the blog for more information coming soon.
