Get 2016 off to a flying start with a visit to MLUG’s first meeting of the year!

Our next free Midlands LabVIEW User group will be on Monday 11th January from 1pm at The University of Warwick. It has now been running for over a year and continues to be well attended by many professionals from the world of LabVIEW. Our guest speakers are Dr. Mathis Baumert from Intelligent Energy, on how Matlab and LabVIEW can be successfully combined and Christopher Jones from National Instruments, who will be talking about common issues relating to LabVIEW performance.

Mathis is no stranger to the MLUG meetings and after he received positive feedback from his first presentation back in April he offered to come back for more! He is a Senior Engineer, Certified LabVIEW Architect (CLA) and Certified Teststand Architect (CTA), working within Software and Controls at Intelligent Energy. As a LabVIEW engineer he is involved in developing software for characterising prototype hydrogen fuel cells. This is cutting edge technology and therefore the testing phase which Mathis is involved in is crucial.

Prior to working at Intelligent Energy Mathis spent a number of years working in research and also teaching Post-Graduate students. His research focused on Experimental Physics, specifically quantum optics and cold atoms physics. As part of this work he made several presentations at international conferences.

His presentation will discuss how MatLab, in particular the Simulink extension, and LabVIEW can be combined. A case study will be presented of a hybrid system where time critical Simulink models run embedded in a LabVIEW application on the Compact RIO platform. This set up allowed for rapid prototyping of controls algorithms which lead to a much reduced development time and with that development cost.

Chris Jones is an Applications Engineering (AE) Specialist covering the Northern European Region for all of NI Tools, but with a focus on LabVIEW, RIO, DIAdem and VeriStand. He is a Certified LabVIEW Architect (CLA), LabVIEW Embedded Systems Developer (CLED) and TestStand Developer (CTD). He’s been with National Instruments for over 3 years, but has used LabVIEW for many years prior to this.

With his presentation Chris aims to cover some common issues relating to LabVIEW Performance, including sources of excessive memory and CPU usage. He will also cover the tools that are available to benchmark and identify performance issues. There will be demonstrations of these potential issues using LabVIEW examples and the tools to use to identify and resolve them.

Anyone who either uses LabVIEW within their current role or works with LabVIEW would be sure to find this event useful and informative, as well as being a good opportunity to network. Those interested in attending this free event should contact Jenny Bragg via email (mlug@argentaconsult.com) or call Argenta’s office on 0121 318 6363.
