2016 started with a LabVIEW bang for the attendees of the Midlands User Group!

The first Midlands LabVIEW User Group of 2016 welcomed back regular attendees and two fantastic speakers along with a new segment to the meeting – our ‘show and tell’ session which was well received by the group and will be a regular fixture on the schedule in future. The meeting once again attracted LabVIEW users from a variety of different backgrounds and levels which added further variety to discussions taking place before, during and after the event.

Mathis Baumert is no stranger to the MLUG meetings and has been an active participant for over a year. He is a Senior Engineer, Certified LabVIEW Architect (CLA) and Certified Teststand Architect (CTA), working within Software and Controls at Intelligent Energy. His presentation discussed how MatLab, in particular the Simulink extension, and LabVIEW can be combined. A case study was presented of a hybrid system where time critical Simulink models run embedded in a LabVIEW application on the Compact RIO platform. This set up allowed for rapid prototyping of controls algorithms which lead to a much reduced development time and with that development cost. As with his previous foray into speaking to the User Group, his presentation was well received.

We were also fortunate to attract Chris Jones to the User Group as a guest speaker. He is an Applications Engineering (AE) Specialist covering the Northern European Region for all of NI Tools, but with a focus on LabVIEW, RIO, DIAdem and VeriStand. He is a Certified LabVIEW Architect (CLA), LabVIEW Embedded Systems Developer (CLED) and TestStand Developer (CTD) and has been with NI for over 3 years. With his presentation Chris aimed to cover some common issues relating to LabVIEW Performance, including sources of excessive memory and CPU usage. He also covered the tools that are available to benchmark and identify performance issues. A particular highlight for attendees was the fact that he used demonstrations of these potential issues using LabVIEW examples and acknowledged the tools to use to identify and resolve them. This helped those who don’t use LabVIEW on a day to day basis to see it in practice utilising case study examples.

An addition to the meeting was a ‘show and tell’ segment, based on the classic school assembly activity! Chris Woodhams, Managing Director of Argenta, set the task to develop a VI that determined conformity of a supplied dataset to Benford's Law. Each person that took part presented their solution, which initiated some interesting discussions around the different approaches. For those who are not using LabVIEW frequently within their current roles, this provided a good opportunity to code! Everyones solution achieved the goal of testing Benford’s Law and they all received a gift for taking part.

The next event will be on Monday 18th Aprilfrom 1pm; further details will be available in the coming weeks and will be available on Argenta’s blog page as they are released.

Anyone who either uses LabVIEW within their current role or works with LabVIEW would be sure to find this event useful and informative, as well as being a good opportunity to network. Those interested in attending this free event should contact Jenny Bragg via email (mlug@argentaconsult.com) or call Argenta’s office on 0121 318 6363.

Our previous meetings have all been well received and importantly well attended with many regulars attending which is fantastic!

Once again we are welcoming speakers to talk about their latest innovative projects. There’s time to ask questions and enjoy networking with fellow practitioners. We have also introduced a new segment to the meeting– a ‘show and tell’ session with a coding challenge!

We’re meeting at:
